How to Assess Your English Proficiency on Your Own

After conducting over 5,000 English proficiency assessments, I have developed a simple, accurate framework for self-evaluation. Understanding where you are is the first step to meaningful improvement.

The Six Levels of Business English Proficiency

Level 1 – Tabula Rasa

Minimal English knowledge. Like a blank slate, with almost no vocabulary or grammar foundation for professional use.

Level 2 – Beginner

Can answer very basic personal questions (name, age, location) but cannot hold a business conversation.

Level 3 – Basic Conversationalist

Capable of very basic conversation and can manage simple travel tasks like ordering food or asking for directions — but not professional communication.

Level 4 – Functional (with gaps)

Can engage in small talk but struggles with fluency. Translates every word from native language to English, tires quickly, and avoids complex discussions.

Level 5 – Advanced (but held back)

Has high-level conversation ability and grasps common tenses, but avoids business presentations, feels inauthentic in English, and switches back to native language under pressure.

Level 6 – Proficient Professional

Communicates in English with confidence, fluency, and professionalism. Thinks in English rather than translating. Represents themselves and their company at the highest level.

The Core Message

Anyone can improve their English and advance through the proficiency levels. Progress requires time, the right methodology, and consistent practice — but it is absolutely achievable for every professional.

Understanding your current level honestly is the most powerful first step you can take.
